Great food, cool music, and friends - old, and, many just acquainted.
The sunny back room and outdoor patio at Halvorson's was packed this evening with jazz fans, supporters, presenters, and musicians who all turned out to see the 26th annual Burlington Discover Jazz Festival off to a memorable start.
The opening reception at Halvorson's is a longstanding tradition of the Festival, and tonight was my fourth one. It gets better every year as I come to know more people in the community, and have the perspective of one more year to appreciate the special event that captivates the city every year around this time.
Mayor Bob Kiss offered the proclamation that June is Jazz Appreciation Month in Burlington, and his introduction ended with a resounding cheer from the patio as he said,"jazz lives here!"
Tomorrow holds the first in the "Meet the Artist" sessions with artist-in-residence, jazz critic Bob Blumenthal. Later in the evening it's the double bill opener with Esperanza Spalding and Anat Cohen.
And maybe some time on the street afterward, soaking in the music as it pours out from every corner of Church Street.
So much to look forward to over the next 10 days!
