Two Places At Once

It can be a struggle to be two places at once. We had a wonderful session Monday night in the VPR Performance Studio (listen to it on-line below) with Jennifer Hartswick on trumpet and vocals, Joe Davidian on piano and Robinson Morse on upright bass, but I was aware that at least three of us wished we could have also caught the pianist Luis Perdomo and his trio at the FlynnSpace. (See below the blog post - Luis Perdomo in a Commanding Lead)

Similarly, Diana Krall's sold out Sunday night show was wonderful in spite of her quiet battle with a heavy cold. The sympathetic crowd applauded her when she said, "I'm only a mom" but I can bet she wished she could just be out of the limelight relaxing (probably not the best choice of words with twin 2 1/2yr olds traveling with her) and not on-stage struggling with a box of tissues, her vocal mike and the piano. In spite of her health she and the band turned in a great show with highlights including drummer Jeff Hamilton's brush-work, guitarist Anthony Wilson's extensive solos, and the sound of Robert Hurst's upright bass. I especially enjoyed Diana Krall's take on such Brazilian classics as So Nice and Quiet Nights , both included on her new CD Quiet Nights.

I'm looking forward to tonight's show at the FlynnSpace with the 17yr old Grace Kelly. The Saturday night Waterfront World Tent with Vermont's own Movement of the People: The Fela Kuti Project opening for Pato Bantan, Culture featuring Kenyatta Hill and Corey Harris will have enough dancing to hold me. But of course I'm very curious about Pink Martini up at the Flynn.

How to be in two places...?
